Shawano Community High School recognized athletes in the nine fall sports Monday at The Gathering in Shawano. Each of the teams, which found success in different ways, got one last chance to review the 2015 season.
Senior middle hitter Erika Dunnam was named Player of the Year in the Bay Conference, so it was no surprise that she took home a share of the girls volleyball team’s MVP award, along with setter Annelies Young.
Dunnam and Young led the team to a 24-13 record and fourth place in the Bay Conference.
Other volleyball awards went to Kate Senzig, the most improved improved player; Meagan Ward, Coaches Choice Award recipient for her positive spirit and effort; and libero Saige Henning, the top defensive player.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Seniors Austin Lhotka and Teagan Monfils took home the Most Valuable awards, and Madeline Hanson and Chase Lhotka earned awards for being the most dedicated runners.
Austin Lhotka, who had ran well throughout the season and competed at the WIAA state meet one year ago, was unable to qualify this season.
“He ran up to 9 miles a day, just with base work, and then came back for speed stuff,” coach Steve Stomberg said. “You put that much time and effort into cross-country, you know you’re going to go a long ways.”
Brett Lorge and Michael Mault received the Coaches Award for the boys team; Savannah Johnson and Hannah Williams won the honor for the girls team. The most improved runners were Alice Hoffman and Camron Wickman.
SWIMMING
For the co-op Shawano/Bonduel swim team, head coach Sharon Hanson awarded MVP plaques to one swimmer from each school: Clare Martell, from Bonduel, and Emme Quandt, from Shawano. Martell is a three-time state qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke heading into sectionals on Saturday.
Alyssa Anker earned the Team Spirit award. Brittany Angeli was recognized as the most outstanding swimmer. The Most Dedicated award went to Lydia Colon, and the Coaches Award was given to Lauren Roloff.
FOOTBALL
With a 2-7 record, the SCHS football team improved while trying to make an impact in the Bay Conference, coach Alan Tomow said.
Tomow said other coaches in the conference are taking notice of the Hawks, a big step up from three years in the past.
Crede Timm earned the Rookie of the Year award. Alan Leiser took home the Most Improved award. Jared Tavernier was the Most Valuable Player on defense, and quarterback Jack Hanauer won the award on offense.
Tomow gave out co-MVP awards to Zeke Gueths and Dylan Sumnicht, specifically in helping the offense average 18 points per game.
SOCCER
The only two returning starters to Shawano’s boys soccer team this fall, Jacob Dickmann and Michael Teeter, were awarded the team Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP awards, respectively.
Senior goalkeeper Manny Morel was recognized as the overall Most Valuable Player to the team, which compiled a 6-15-1 record.
GOLF
Senior Julia Beck earned the golf team’s Captain Award for being “a rock” at the top of the Hawks’ lineup with consistent play, coach Dean Kugler said.
The team’s Most Valuable Player award went to Breanna Zook, who advanced to sectionals as a junior and will be expected to lead a new set of girls next season.
Gabby Krueger was honored as with the Most Improved award. She began golfing just one year ago.
TENNIS
The No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Hokenstad and Meghan Hoffman earned the award for Most Valuable Players for the second consecutive year.
Hannah Neumann was named Most Dedicated. Cheyenne Kneuppel earned the Most Improved Player award. Katherine Kugel was recognized as a team player.
CHEER
The cheer squad recognized several performers. Coach Mary Kast presented the Most Valuable award to Maya Irhke. Brandon Bolin was awarded the Spirit of the Hawks award.
Kale McHugh earned the Beast of the Base award for his role in stunts. Allison Raddant was named the top flyer. Tasia Wozniak earned the Most Improved award.
