Whenever the Shawano Community High School football team needed to make a play during its homecoming game Saturday afternoon, junior quarterback Jack Hanauer relied on wide receivers Adam Bartz and Dylan Sumnicht.

They ran slants, out routes and double moves all over the opposing defense, racking up an even 168 yards apiece in the Hawks’ 33-26 victory over Green Bay West. Bartz had three touchdown catches and Sumnich one.

“We think we have a quarterback that can make all the throws, and Jack has shown that. He’s a very good high school quarterback right now,” SCHS head coach Alan Tomow said. “We thought with Dylan’s speed, they were trying to cover him with linebackers and it doesn’t work.

“With Adam, we thought that if he could get a free release, he could stretch the field a little bit more. All those things worked for us. They did a phenomenal job today.”

Green Bay West continued with the same strategy on defense even after the Hawks dominated the second quarter, including two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half to take a seven-point lead into halftime.

“We were manned up, some of our guys got caught peeking in the backfield and letting the guy go by them,” Wildcats head coach Jeff Behrendt said. “Really, it came down to discipline and how they were supposed to play the position.”

One week after a disastrous special teams performance in which the Hawks gave up a kick return for a touchdown and multiple long punt returns, Tomow decided to chance things.

He called for three onside kicks during the game, with the Hawks recovering one. As for punt coverage, SCHS was strong, allowing the Wildcats’ Jamal Brown and teammates little open space.

“From the kickoff coverage standpoint to the punting, everything was a lot better this week,” Tomow said. “It shows in these close games how special teams can really help us out.”

Finally, Tomow was happy with his team’s performance on the ground. Junior Kien Moorman tallied 72 yards on 22 carries. Tyler Onesti got a few carries in the second half in short-yardage situations.

“Those two are doing a really good job. Tyler can come in and play fullback. Being a two-way player, still count on him to carry the ball and get the tough yards up the middle. Kien, if we just give him a little bit of an opening, he will just slip through with shiftiness to make plays.”

But Tomow wants to see a little more out of his ground game.

“I’d like us to be a little more consistent on the ground to give us a little more balance,” he said.
