The Shawano Community High School boys soccer team played the New London Bulldogs even for the first 20 minutes Thursday night.

After that, however, New London found the back of the net three times within seven minutes and went on to trounce the Hawks 8-4.

“Coming in here with the team I have, I expected a W,” New London head coach Joe Messina said. “I didn’t expect to let up that many goals, but I moved some people around once we started getting the score higher.”

The Hawks created some pressure in the ensuing minutes, creating three good scoring chances, including two by junior Tyler Buerman, but could not score.

Buerman’s first chance, with about 13 minutes remaining in the first half, was a clean shot at the goalkeeper that almost rebounded to him for another shot.

The second shot was a deep shot, from over 20 yards out, that sailed just feet over the goal.

Sophomore Payden Buck made a few defensive stops, including clearing a ball off the goal line after goalkeeper Manny Morel ran out to play a ball.

The Bulldogs’ Jason Sanderfoot flew the ball past the Hawks’ second goalkeeper, Tyrell Hesse, just eight minutes into the second half, and again three minutes later to complete a hat trick.

Sanderfoot scored in the first half off a ball that rebounded off the post directly to him.

The Bulldogs’ combination play and speed gave the Shawano defense troubles throughout the night.

Tom Trinko was the first Hawk to find the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 56th minute, trimming New London’s lead to 6-1.

Buck doubled the goal count for SCHS (2-6, 0-3 Bay Conference) three minutes later on a cross from Jacob Dickmann into the crowded box.

Aaron Lammers went on to score in the 77th minute after New London had extended its lead to 8-2.

“I moved people around. I was trying some new things. I don’t think we have figured out where everybody belongs yet,” SCHS head coach Bob Croschere said. “In games like this, it was kind of out of hand, so I started to move people to see what would work a little bit different.”

Buerman tallied the final goal of the game on a cross from SCHS freshman Mitchell Jung.

Manny Morel recorded eight saves for the Hawks in the first half before playing middle back for the majority of the second half. Hesse stopped five shots.

“We moved a little bit better, we communicated a little bit better,” Croschere said. “Like I said, different people in different positions, so we will see what happens moving forward.”
