Senior Ian Lewis had the meet’s best score, and the Shawano Community High School boys golf team beat Oconto Falls and Seymour, but lost to Marinette, in a meet Friday at Shawano Lake Golf Course in Shawano.
Lewis carded a 37. Teammates Braden Mueller shot a 40, Garrett Schlise a 43 and Cole Huntington a 49.
“The season is pretty young and it’s happening so fast,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “So far, Ian and Braden have been playing very well.”
Lewis shot a par 36 earlier this week and was one over on Friday.
“Our goal is really to get that No. 3-4-5 spots going,” Kugler said.
Shawano’s team score of 169 beat Oconto Falls (181) and Seymour (192).
Kugler said playing on their home course helped the Hawks.
“Last year, we didn’t really have the opportunity to play at home because of all that bad weather,” he said. “You generally play better at home.”
Marinette was able to beat Shawano with a meet-best 165.
“They have two young freshmen playing the No. 4 and 5 positions that are absolutely killing it,” Kugler said. “Those two guys have been scoring great. They already had three very solid guys at the top.”
Kugler said Marinette could run away with the Bay Conference.
The Hawks face another potentially tough Bay Conference team, New London, on Monday.
“They’ve been playing very well, too,” Kugler said. “That will be a big one for us. If we can compete with them, that would be great. A win would be fantastic.”
Kugler said his team is just going to keep at it.
“We’re going to try and get better and better as the year goes on,” he said.
