Results used as gauge during Natural Resources Board meeting in May

Results from the 2019 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin Conservation Congress Spring Fish and Wildlife Rules Hearings are available online.

More than 10,000 individuals participated, with 3,402 attending the meetings April 8, and another 7,310 using the new online feature that ended April 11.

The meeting results, combined with written comments and DNR recommendations, are used to advise the state Natural Resources Board. The results will be reviewed at the board’s May 22 meeting in Madison. Votes are non-binding and are presented to the board as a gauge of the public’s support or non-support for proposed changes.

On questions involving Shawano County, those in attendance at the April 8 meeting or who voted online were against establishing an 18-inch minimum length limit and a daily bag limit of three for walleye (question 27) by two votes (27-25). That same group was against reducing the daily walleye bag limit from five to three (question 16) by a 29-22 vote.

However, online votes from respondents who recreate in the county were for both resolutions. The vote tally was 228-123 on question 27 and 211-147 on question 16. Overall state results also voted in favor (4,756-1,959 on question 27, and 5,120-2,488 on question 16).

Question 52 regarding conducting a pilot CWD Payment for Positives program in 2019 was a hot topic at the Shawano County hearing. In-person and online voters voted in favor by two votes, 25-23.

Online voters who recreate in the county were in favor of the resolution (176-127). Across the state, citizens were also were in favor (4,408-3,265).

The baiting and feeding ban resolution (question 56) was opposed by those in attendance or voted online (31-26), but again was accepted by the online voters in the county (184-144) and by those around the state (5,390-2978).

Implementing a ban on lead ammunition and fishing gear (questions 85 and 86) was opposed by those in attendance or voting online. Vote totals were 39-13 against banning lead ammo and 40-12 against banning lead fishing equipment.

Online voters also voted against both resolutions (181-144 for question 85, and 187-138 for question 86). The rest of the state voted against as well (4,297-3,868 on question 85, and 4,237-3,931 on question 86).

Hawks show fight in later innings

Leader Photo by Morgan Rode Shawano’s Ian Reinders delivers a pitch during the middle innings of Monday’s nonconference loss to Oconto Falls at Memorial Park in Shawano.

The Shawano Community High School baseball team came up on the wrong end of a 16-6 nonconference clash with Oconto Falls at Memorial Park in Shawano on Monday, but the team showed plenty of resiliency.

Facing a 13-2 deficit and down to their final strike in the fifth inning, the Hawks (1-7) scratched across a couple of runs and were able to extend the game to a full seven innings.

“That might have been something positive for our guys,” Shawano coach Rob Wolff said. “Seeing that we could put up runs — we’ve been struggling to score runs this year so far, just putting hits together.”

Shawano’s fifth inning rally came with several starters cheering on some of the players that started the game on the bench.

Seniors Steve Hoffmann and Collin Buerman each reached base with one out despite the ball not leaving the infield. After a strikeout for the second out, senior Seth Westphal walked to load the bases.

Junior Wylee Springborn got down in the count but was able to put the ball in play. A throwing error allowed Hoffmann and Buerman to score and ensured there would at least be a sixth inning as Oconto Falls (2-3) no longer led by 10-plus runs.

After Springborn had reached, sophomore Zach Erdmann singled home Westphal to make it 13-5. A strikeout ended the frame, stranding the bases loaded.

Westphal took over on the mound in the sixth and worked around a two-out walk to ensure the game would last seven innings.

Sophomore Kaleb Lowney and Hoffmann each walked for the Hawks to open their half of the sixth before senior Mason Dingeldein delivered a RBI single.

Shawano committed three errors in the top of the seventh to allow Oconto Falls to extend its lead to 16-6.

Erdmann and senior Jake Grignon walked to open the Hawks seventh, but three straight outs ended the contest.

“I don’t have the magic words and I don’t know what to say anymore,” Wolff said. “We’re just struggling — offensively, defensively, pitching, it’s just rough right now and I’m hoping maybe one game will get us going and get us out of this funk. We are just stuck right now.”

Shawano got a runner on in the first and second innings, but only had six batters bat as a caught stealing and lineout double play wiped out the baserunners.

Oconto Falls scored once in the first inning and twice in the third off Shawano starting pitcher Karson Rades, a senior. The Panthers used a three-run fourth to go up 6-0.

After Shawano scored twice in the fourth to make it 6-2, Oconto Falls opened up a big lead with a six-run fifth.

“We just have to have a short memory and just move on to the next game, forget what happened in the past,” said Shawano senior Kris Krause, who had two hits in as many at-bats and also pitched. “Just move on and keep fighting and don’t remember any of the mistakes you make. Obviously you want to get better, but if you don’t remember them (the mistakes), they can’t haunt you.”

It’s in the stars: Packers bounce-back season a lock

$

To maintain one’s rep as a legitimate clairvoyant requires a demonstrably successful track record, or at least a professional demeanor.

Come to the table with dog-eared tarot cards or used tea leaves, for example, and people may look at you as something less than a supernatural real deal.

Likewise, strike out on enough of your prognostications and eventually you’ll be regarded as a toy-department charlatan who in reality is just another interested bystander with a forum, running his yap.

The great Nostradamus had the right idea. Old “Hedge Your Bets” made his predictions so cloudy and so far in ahead in the future that no one living was ever be able to come back and rub his face in all of the ones he air-balled.

To that end, and with a nod to that 16th Century weasel, here is a pro football forecast that has nothing to do with which college stars the Green Bay Packers will end up with after this week’s draft.

There are too many variables in a draft for even the universe to be certain about who’s going where and when.

But there are no such obstacles preventing a clear vision of how the future shakes out five to eight months from now. That may sound like more of the same mountebank weasel-ry, but it’s not, if you think about it — or even better, if you don’t think about it, and instead focus on the Green Bay Packers’ upcoming 11-5, back-to-the-playoffs season.

Based on opponents’ win-loss records from last year, the Packers play the 14th-most difficult schedule, harder than Detroit’s but easier than Chicago’s and Minnesota’s. New England and the L.A. Rams, last year’s Super Bowl teams, are tied for the second-easiest. So much for those backbreaking first-place schedules.

Ultimately, none of that matters because when you’re contending for a championship you have to assume you can beat everyone.

A fast start would be a big help, given that the Packers play four of their last six games on the road, and don’t get their bye until Week 11 — their latest in the season since the league introduced the bye week in 1990.

But saying the Packers need to start fast is like opening a fortune cookie that reads, “Soon you will be finished with dinner.” Tell us something we don’t know.

Fate can be kind, and it can be a cruel bully. For the past two seasons, fate has stacked the books in the Packers’ lockers and stolen their lunch money. If karma were legal tender they’d have Dallas Cowboys money stored up.

That which went south for the Packers last year, which was just about everything, will straighten out this time around. The bad bounces, questionable calls and untimely injuries that vexed them in 2017 and ’18 will taper and redistribute elsewhere. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will flourish in the new offensive scheme and win his third MVP award.

More specifically, the Packers’ 11-5 will nose out Chicago’s 10-6 season and Minnesota’s 9-7. Jake Kumerow will blossom into Rodgers’ second-favorite receiver, behind Davante Adams.

Muhammad Wilkerson and the free agent Smiths will have a combined 11 sacks to go with Kyler Fackrell’s five.

The Packers will split with the Bears and Vikings but sweep the Lions. They’ll lose to Philadelphia but annihilate Dallas — not a slight to Randall Cobb, but more a case of it always being fun to beat Dallas.

Once again the schedule has worked out such that the Packers play back-to-back road games — one on the west coast (San Francisco) and one out east (New York Giants). In addition to losses to Chicago, Minnesota, Philadelphia and Kansas City, the Pack will drop one of these two.

These aren’t predictions; they’re 100 percent certainties, made in collaboration with a true visionary, one who predicted B.J. Raji’s pick-six, the 19-game winning streak and the KO of Fred Williamson in Super Bowl I.

Try telling it to some people, though, and they won’t believe you.

North Star Mohican Casino Resort announced that it has made a $750 donation to the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer in the name of Menominee Indian boys basketball coach James Oshkeshequoam.

Oshkeshequoam, who is one of the Division 4 boys All Star coaches, was selected to coach for the 2019 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All Star Games in Wisconsin Dells in June. The main goal of the event is to raise money to help fight the battle against childhood cancer. Every All Star participant must raise money in order to participate in the games.

“It is my goal to be the leading fundraiser for this longtime event in the state of Wisconsin and in helping fight against childhood cancer,” said Oshkeshequoam. “This is a great cause to support as the success rate of beating childhood cancer is now near 80%. We want to make that number 100%.”

All proceeds raised by All-Star participants will be pooled together for one large check presentation to the MACC (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) Fund and presented at halftime of the Milwaukee Bucks MACC Fund game. Since the All-Star Games started in 1978, the WBCA and its participants have raised over $2.8 million to donate to the MACC Fund.

Free resources for fishing opener

As anglers are readying gear for the opening of the 2019 fishing season on May 4, they can add a free guide and downloadable app to their lures, lines and bobbers.

Wisconsin Sea Grant offers a downloadable four-page guide on selecting lure colors to increase the odds of reeling in a catch. The resource, “Selecting Lure Colors for Successful Fishing,” discusses how water depth and clarity, along with the level of light, influences how fish see colors.

Sea Grant also offers a popular “Fish ID” that is available via website and mobile app. It’s a photo-rich guide to what’s in the creel. To use the web version or download for Android devices, visit Sea Grant’s website — www.seagrant.wisc.edu/fish-id.
