WEEK AHEAD

FOOTBALL

WHAT: WIAA Division 5 Level 2 Playoff, No. 2 Bonduel vs. No. 6 Iola-Scandinavia

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Bonduel High School, 400 W. Green Bay St., Bonduel

WHY IT MATTERS: Even in the postseason, Bonduel’s biggest obstacle is still the Central Wisconsin Conference-8. The second-seeded Bears face No. 6 Iola-Scandinavia for a chance to advance to Level 3 of the WIAA Division 5 playoffs, which will likely be against top-seeded Amherst. Bonduel won its regular season game against Iola-Scandinavia 44-29. The Thunderbirds had some big plays against Bonduel, including a first-quarter 83-yard pass from Cameron Gruenewald to Evan Fuhs. The Bears’ senior running back trio of Hunter VanDerLinden, Dan Tauchen and Hunter Berry combined for 319 yards rushing.

CROSS-COUNTRY

WHAT: WIAA State Cross-Country Championships

WHEN: 11:30 a.m. Saturday

WHERE: Ridges Golf Course, 2311 Griffith Ave., Wisconsin Rapids

WHY IT MATTERS: Five area runners will go up against the top runners in the state Saturday at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Shawano Community High School will be represented by junior Austin Lhotka, who took 11th in the WIAA Division 1 Stevens Point sectional to nab an individual qualifying spot. Bonduel senior Sam Falck will make his third trip to the state meet, but the first without his team. Falck took third in the Division 3 Amherst sectional. Marion’s Delaney Greene-Gretzinger placed second in the Division 3 girls race to qualify for the state meet. In the Division 2 Tomahawk sectional, Clintonville’s Allison Johnson and Jessica Petruzates finished fourth and sixth, respectively, to qualify.
