The fourth-seeded Shawano Community High School volleyball team saw its season come to an end at the hands of top-ranked Green Bay Notre Dame in the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Thursday in Green Bay.
Notre Dame won all three sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-16).
Erika Dunnam led Shawano (14-16) offensively with seven kills and two blocks. Tori Wiskow and Miranda Washinawatok each added four kills. Annelies Young had 19 assists, three digs and two blocks.
“They played really well tonight. And they played with heart,” Shawano coach Jessica Cumberland said. “With the circumstances of this week, they pulled it together. We as a coaching staff were very proud of the way they played.”
Two SCHS students, Cody Borsche and Tyler Welch, and a Bonduel High School student, Paige Brunette, died in a car crash Tuesday night. Another SCHS student, Ryan Swadner, is in critical condition.
A moment of silence was held before the match, and Notre Dame presented Shawano with a dozen roses.
“We lost to Notre Dame, but we played against Notre Dame, too,” Cumberland said. “We played hard.”
Notre Dame will host No. 2 Seymour in the regional final Saturday.
