An overtime goal by Shawano Community High School senior Michael Medina lifted the Hawks to a 1-0 win over Menasha on Tuesday in Shawano.

The victory secured a fourth-place finish in the Bay Conference for the Hawks.

After 98 scoreless minutes, Medina, a forward, managed to get a goal on a scrum in front of the net.

“Their goalie made a couple of nice saves, but couldn’t catch the ball,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “Somebody was in the right spot on one of the deflections to put in the goal — Mike Medina.”

It was Medina’s first goal of the season.

“It was nice for him,” Croschere said. “It was nice for the team to get this last win. Both wins this week.”

Shawano defeated Denmark 3-2 Tuesday.

Senior goaltender Sajen Knueppel had 10 saves Thursday.

“Like I said at the beginning of the year, I thought that’s around where we’d be, fourth or fifth,” Croschere said. “I was happy were were in the top half. It would have been nice to be a little bit higher, but there were a few teams out there that had solid squads.”

The Hawks will be the sixth seed in the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament that opens at Wausau East on Tuesday.
