Senior Michael Gibson II is about to graduate from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, but that does not mean his athletic career is coming to an end.

Gibson made the decision to play collegiate football for UW-Stevens Point in December, so he will suit up for the Pointers this fall.

Gibson, who also played basketball and baseball for the Chargers this school year, put together some of his game tapes before his dad, Michael Gibson, helped get the film out to colleges.

Several schools showed interest in Gibson, who wanted to attend a school in the area so that he could be close to family. He ended up visiting UW-River Falls and UW-Stevens Point before making his decision.

“I just fell in love with UWSP, the campus, people and the coaches,” said Gibson.

“It’s an amazing feeling and dream come true to know I can continue my athletic career another four years,” he added.

Gibson played just his senior season with Witt-Birn after moving to the area before the school year. Before that, he attended and played for North Oldham High School in Kentucky.

While playing in Kentucky, basketball seemed to be the sport Gibson was gravitating toward. He sat out the football season during his sophomore year so he could focus on basketball.

He came back to football during his junior year. Playing as an outside linebacker and defensive end, Gibson registered 72 tackles to lead the team.

After visiting UWSP and having some time to talk to coaches and players, Gibson expects to play outside linebacker for the Pointers.

“I’ve met all the coaches and some of the players. Great group of guys and can’t wait to play with and for them,” said Gibson. “I’ve kinda picked up their defensive schemes, particularly the linebacker side.”

Gibson thanked his parents for their support over the years, mentioning that his dad helped him become the person he is as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Playing for UWSP, which is less than 50 minutes from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, Gibson knows he will have the support of his family when he gets his chance to play at the college level.
