After giving it their all during the fall sports seasons, Shawano Community High School athletes were recognized for their efforts at the Shawano Athletics Fall Banquet at The Gathering on Monday.
Shawano coaches presented a number of awards to the deserving athletes while also providing short recaps of their seasons. The event was sponsored by the Shawano Athletic Booster Club.
Volleyball
The Shawano volleyball team had another season to remember this fall, finishing with a 32-9 record overall and second place finish in the Bay Conference under coach Breanna Young.
The Hawks were handed a No. 4 seed in the postseason and advanced to the regional title game.
Setter Bayleigh Laabs orchestrated the team’s strong attack game and was named the team’s most valuable player. Kyra Klement was deemed the most valuable defensive player.
Tori DePerry earned the spark plug award for the energy and intensity she brought with her to the court while Katelyn Wilber was given the Heart of the Hawk award. Margo Gull was named the most improved player.
Five players on the team also were honored for earning spots on the all-conference teams.
Football
Shawano’s young football team finished the season with a 1-7 record in conference and were 1-8 overall.
Despite the down season, coach Alan Tomow saw growth in his team and was pleased with how they kept battling.
Nick Grignon was handed plenty of honors on the night, including being named the team’s most valuable player and most valuable player on defense. Brayden Dickelman was the most valuable offensive player after powering the running game.
Zach Erdmann was selected as the most improved while Elliott Lowney was the rookie of the year after serving as one of the top threats in the passing game.
Seven Hawks made an all-conference team.
Girls cross-country
For the first time in school history, the Shawano girls cross-country team won a conference championship. All seven of the team’s runners made an all-conference team under the direction of coach Steve Stomberg.
Lydia Beyer was selected as the team’s most valuable runner while Alice Hoffmann earned the coaches award.
The most improved award went to Grace Beyer while Odessa Arce overcame an early injury before helping the team late in the season to be chosen as the most dedicated.
Boys cross-country
A young boys cross-country team finished second at the conference meet. Five boys runners made an all-conference team.
Stomberg sees a bright bright future for the boys as its top-seven runners could return next year.
Ethan Chelberg was named the team’s most valuable runner while Carter Schmidt earned the coaches award.
Elijah Etten secured the most dedicated honor while Rory Johnson was the most improved runner.
Girls golf
In a tough Bay Conference field, Shawano battled its way to third place and had tour golfers earn all-conference honors. Coach Dean Kugler praised the team’s hard work and efforts this fall.
Taylor Johnson was tabbed the most valuable player after qualifying for sectionals as an individual.
The Heart of the Hawk award went to Kylie Rusch, while Katelyn Laatsch was the most improved player.
Girls tennis
Shawano’s girls tennis team came in sixth in the conference with a 3-5 record under coach Matt Zoll.
Isabella Buettner was the team’s most valuable player after earning a spot on the all-conference second team.
Rylie Anderson was named the rising star while Lydia Dobberstein and Alana Krolow each were voted the winners of the Heart of the Hawk award.
Boys soccer
Shawano’s boys soccer team finished the season with a 3-15-2 record under coach Robert Croschere. The Hawks nearly pulled an upset over Lakeland in the postseason.
Mitchell Jung was the team’s most valuable player. Michael Klement was chosen as the offensive most valuable player while Lucas tePlate was the defensive most valuable player. Jung and Klement represented the Hawks on the all-conference teams.
The most improved player award went to Seth Westphal while Ethan Schwitzer was the rookie of the year.
Girls swim
The Shawano/Bonduel girls co-op recently wrapped up its fall season competing at sectionals. Coach Sharon Hanson was proud of the team’s improvement over the year and multiple swimmers that cut several seconds off their times.
Madi Hanson was the most valuable swimmer from Shawano while Haley Quandt was named the most valuable swimmer from Bonduel.
The most dedicated award went to Isabel Colon while Anne Carrier was the most improved. Macy Monfils was selected as the Heart of the Hawk award winner while Tatiana Kunschke was honored as the captain.
Cheer
Shawano’s cheer squad urged both the football and girls swim teams on this fall along with partaking in competitions of its own.
Hannah Kadonsky was the most valuable athlete and also was given the top flyer award. Emily Watters was the team’s top tumbler.
Caprice Rush and Chloé Krueger were each selected as Spirit of the Hawk winners while Payten Marohl was named the best base.
