The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team lost a close game to Hortonville to open Bay Conference play on the road Tuesday.
Shawano (0-2, 0-1 Bay) and Hortonville (3-1, 1-0 Bay) were separated by one point after three quarters of play. The Polar Bears outscored the Hawks 10-6 in the final quarter to secure the 43-38 win.
“It was a great game,” Shawano coach Ryan Koenig said. “Just a really good effort against one of the top teams in the Bay Conference.”
Koenig said his young team is learning but committed too many turnovers.
Lindsey Kurtz, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, led the Hawks with 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Megan Klitzke added eight points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Heidi Huebner, a 5-foot-4 senior guard, led Hortonville with 11 points.
