The Shawano Spring Athletic Banquet at The Gathering on Wednesday evening marked the official end of the spring sports season for Shawano Community High School.
The spring season was condensed into a few short weeks for most Hawks’ teams. Despite the weather-plagued spring, a number of individuals had standout seasons and were recognized at the banquet that was sponsored by the Shawano Athletic Booster Club.
Brandi Gueths collected a trio of prestigious award on the night, including being named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the recipient of the Martzke Award and Athlete of the Year Award.
For the boys, Jacob Lacy was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Brad Bartz earned the Martzke Award and Cole Nelson was declared the Athlete of the Year.
Bartz, Gueths, Casey Baumann, Chase Lhotka and Hannah Wendorff were honored for playing a sport during each season of their high school careers.
Here are the award winners for each spring sport:
Softball
The Shawano softball team finished third in the Bay Conference and made it to the Division 2 regional final.
Gracyn Habeck took home the Coaches Award while Jewel Waupekenay was named the most improved. Bayleigh Laabs earned the team’s Golden Glove Award.
Brianna Zook broke the team record for home runs in a season and picked up the Silver Slugger Award while also being named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
Girls soccer
The girls soccer team had to battle through numerous injuries while also dealing with the subpar weather conditions this spring. The Hawks picked up two conference wins.
Kyra Klement and Emily Watters earned the Most Dedicated and Most Improved awards, respectively.
Lindsey Roloff was the team’s Offensive MVP while Peyton Buerman was the Defensive MVP. Sydney Steinbach picked up the Most Valuable Player Award.
Baseball
The Hawks finished the conference season with a 7-5 record to take third place. Shawano nearly rallied past Pulaski in the regional playoff opener.
Isaac Buntrock was named the team’s most improved player. Nicholas Grignon and Joey Tadych earned the offensive and defensive player of the year awards, respectively.
Baumann was recognized with the Most Valuable Player Award.
Track
Both the Hawks’ girls and boys track teams experienced plenty of success throughout the spring season. The school had several athletes advance to sectionals while three individuals qualified for the state meet.
For the girls, Carrie Young, Wendorff, Tori DePerry and Christa Cummings all received Most Valuable awards on the night. Lydia Beyer earned the Al Hartman MVP.
On the boys side, Ethan Chelberg and Gage Timm each were named rookie of the year. Payden Buck and Atty Wagner were recognized with Most Valuable awards while Parker Pues was the Al Hartman MVP.
Boys tennis
The Hawks earned a fourth-place finish in the Bay Conference and had a number of singles players and doubles teams named to all-conference teams.
Rhain Rodenbeck picked up the Rising Star Award while Adam Piantek earned the Heart of the Hawk Award.
No. 1 singles player Harrison Sturycz earned the Most Valuable Player Award.
Boys golf
Despite having a young roster, the Shawano boys golf team enjoyed a strong season. The team placed fifth at the conference meet.
Nicholas Sherman was recognized with the Hawk Award while Alex Mueller was the team’s Most Valuable Player.
