Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School sophomore Chad Moegenburg is headed to Madison for the WIAA Division 3 state tournament after placing third at sectionals Saturday.
Moegenburg (41-8) defeated Weyauwega-Fremont’s Easton Groskreutz in the third-place match at 113 pounds at the Bonduel sectional held in Shawano.
Moegenburg pinned Lucas Bean, of Three Lakes, in 2 minutes, 15 seconds in the quarterfinal before suffering his first loss, a 12-4 major decision to eventual champion Koltin Grzybowski, of Coleman, in the semifinal.
Moegenburg then won by technical fall over Pittsville’s Camron Dammann and posted a 12-5 decision over Groskreutz. Runner-up Tristen Mascarette (38-3), of Florence-Niagara, pinned Moegenburg in 1:09 in the wrestleback.
Moegenburg, who was ranked third in the state in his weight class, wrestles No. 8 Brannon Humphrey (29-4), of Durand, in the first round at the state tournament Thursday.
Chargers Jeremy Landowski (152 pounds) and Dylan Sprague (160 pounds) also competed at the sectional tournament but lost in quarterfinal matches.
Landowski dropped a 11-5 decision to Derek Moravec, of Wabeno. Sprague was pinned by Ethan Heil, of Edgar.
