Bonduel had five individual champions and Menominee Indian had one Saturday at the WIAA Division 3 regional in Coleman.
Max Sokowski took the 106-pound title after receiving two byes and pinning Menominee Indian’s Darius Hawkins in the championship match in 2 minutes, 40 seconds.
The 120-pound Jordan Boldt (38-4) returns to sectionals after two pins on Saturday over Lena’s Noah Chang in 1:49 and Coleman’s Billy Ganter in the first-place match in 5:15. The victories also pushed the senior to tie for second-most wins in Bonduel school history at 156.
Isaac Banker (37-5) secured the 170-pound title with a pin over Menominee Indian’s Leone Peters (3:22) and 4-3 decision over Coleman’s Tyler Blanchard in the championship.
Jacob Banker (33-1) pinned Kiko Cajigas, of Lena, in 1:03 in the 182-pound semifinal, and received a win by injury default in the final match to take first.
Jacob Giese (36-5) rounded out the Bears’ champs at 195 pounds with a pin over Bo Krueger, of Gillett/Suring, before picking up a 13-2 major decision over Darius Wayka, of Menominee Indian.
Four other Bears that advanced to Saturday’s sectional in Shawano are Luis Lagunes (113 pounds), Jayson Toellner (120 pounds), Moises Lagunes (145 pounds) and Colin Wussow (220 pounds).
Bonduel placed second as a team with 249 points to regional champion Coleman’s 301.
“We were hoping for five champs and 10 overall sectional qualifiers, so we came pretty close,” Bonduel head coach Chris Rank said. “Having the opportunity for nine guys to get that sectional experience is great, and we’re confident that we’ll be able to get a few down to state.”
For Menominee Indian, Alonzo Haack (35-7) pinned state-ranked Brock Martinson, of Coleman, in the heavyweight championship in 1:44.
“Alonzo is a tough, tough kid, and he hasn’t gotten much attention this year, so he’s just kind of been silently dominating,” Menominee Indian head coach Kirk Bahr said. “That’s exactly what he did today. He goes in as the underdog and then pins (Martinson) in the first period.”
“It was my first match against a state-ranked kid this year,” Haack said, “so I knew it was going to extremely tough. I came into the match with the mindset that I was going to be a regional champion, and I just kept my mind on that and wrestled hard.”
Darius Hawkins (106 pounds), Morgun Fish (132 pounds), Eliott Miller (160 pounds) and Darius Wayka (195 pounds) will all also represent the Eagles at the sectional tournament in Shawano.
“It’s as good of a day as we could’ve had,” Bahr said. “I thought we had five solid chances, and they all advanced to sectionals, so that was great to see. We have some very tough individual wrestlers, and we haven’t had the best season team-wise, but to have those individuals move on is a great testament to them.”
