A slippery field didn’t hinder Bonduel as the Bears outplayed Pacelli 46-7 in a Central Wisconsin Conference-Large homecoming matchup on Friday.
The Bears’ 393-83 advantage in rushing yards exemplified Bonduel’s domination. Bonduel also held the Cardinals to just 91 passing yards.
“The excitement was huge tonight,” Bonduel senior Jordan Boldt said, “and we really just tried to push past the rain and not let it affect us. It was definitely a challenge, but it just made our team focus more.”
Bonduel (7-1, 5-1 CWC) opened the game with a touchdown drive capped by Elijah Mastey’s 2-yard run. The Cardinals tied the game in the first quarter on Alexander Schmitz’s 4-yard TD run, set up by an interception by Daniel Mitch.
“We started off a little shaky on defense and offense with the interception,” Bonduel head coach James Westrich said. “As the game went on we settled in a little more and got better defensively. I’m happy with how they progressed.”
Bonduel answered Pacelli’s TD with a 73-yard touchdown run by Mastey on the first play of the subsequent drive.
“Our offense is steady,” Westrich said. “They got the ball back, brought it right down the field and scored, so that changed the momentum back quickly for us.”
The Bears held Pacelli (4-4, 2-4 CWC) to just one first down and 18 yards on the next drive to end the first quarter, and took control the rest of the game.
A 38-yard run by Isaac Boldt in the second quarter led to another Mastey touchdown run.
Jordan Boldt intercepted a pass by Cardinals quarterback Zachary Zimmerman in the end zone to thwart Pacelli’s next drive.
Boldt caught a 28-yard bomb from Parker Bohm on the next drive. A 19-yard pass to Ammen Tachick set up Bonduel on the 1-yard line, and Mastey pushed his way to the end zone with nine seconds left in the half.
Jordan Boldt broke free for a 52-yard run in the third quarter, setting up a 3-yard TD run by Isaac Boldt. Isaac Boldt found the end zone again from 8 yards out to end the period.
Jordan Boldt scored on a 21-yard run in the fourth quarter to give the Bears their final points.
“We still have a lot to improve on,” Jordan Boldt said. “There’s a week left until playoffs so we need to keep pushing forward from this win, but it definitely felt good.”
Boldt was a dominating force in the game with an interception, touchdown, deep catches and a blocked pass.
“I haven’t touched the ball much, and the coaches gave me the opportunity to do that and I’m glad I was able to make plays on them,” he said. “It’s good to know they trust me with it.”
“Jordan ran extremely physical tonight,” Westrich said, “moreso than I’ve seen in the past. I’m proud of how he stepped up and just continues to be a leader for the team. He showed it tonight and it’s great to see.”
Jordan Boldt led the Bears in rushing with 196 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries. Mastey followed with 163 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries. Isaac Boldt ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
