Amherst secured the lead in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large with a 47-20 road win over Bonduel on Friday.
The Bears’ defense couldn’t contain Amherst quarterback Marcus Glodowski, who ran for five touchdowns and 203 yards for the two-time defending state champions.
“Marcus (Glodowski) was special tonight,” Amherst head coach Mark Lusic said. “He bailed us out when we needed it. He was crucial in rushing and getting those touchdowns.”
Bonduel (4-1, 2-1 CWC) dominated defensively in the first half, forcing three turnovers — one of which led to an Elijah Mastey touchdown run.
Amherst’s offense was able to make up for the mistakes.
Amherst (4-1, 3-0 CWC) ran for 221 yards; Bonduel had 151. The Falcons also topped the Bears in passing yards, 195-165.
“Amherst has great discipline, so defensively, we knew we were going to have our work cut out for us,” Bonduel head coach James Westrich said. “We had some missed assignments, and we tried to make some adjustments to turn the game. They force you to be disciplined, and we weren’t very disciplined on defense.”
The Falcons’ forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, allowing them to put up points in their first drive of the game, and again after halftime, which Lusic said was a large factor in the team’s momentum as the Falcons turned a 21-13 halftime lead into a two-score advantage.
“The first play of both kickoffs were key,” Lusic said. “My guys wanted the ball on the opening kickoff, so they made it happen and scored. And then we scored on the opening possession after halftime. Those two scores are what drove the game for us.”
Westrich, on the other hand, felt his team’s momentum shift in the opposite direction.
“We had an opportunity to score right before half and tie it up to get a momentum shift, and instead we almost gave up a touchdown the other way, so momentum was lost there, and it kind of carried through,” Westrich said.
The Bears’ leaders were Alex Garside with seven receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown. Mastey rushed for 135 yards on 19 carries. Riddik Bohm completed 12 of 25 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
“We’re close, but we’re still not there yet,” Westrich said. “We still have a young team in a lot of spots. We’re going to learn from this and hopefully get better next week (at Shiocton). I told them, ‘Hey, we have to get better, but the season’s not lost, and we have a tough game coming up next week so we either get better or we fold up shop, and we’re not going to fold up shop.’”
