Leader Staff
A strong senior season for graduated senior Saige Henning wasn’t enough to earn the top award in the conference, but Henning was one of three Shawano softball players named to the Bay Conference’s first team this spring.
New London’s Leah Porath, who posted the conference’s lowest ERA for a pitcher along with a top-10 bat, was named Player of the Year.
Henning ended the season with a .738 batting average as the Hawks placed third in the Bay Conference and won a regional championship in a 13-10 thriller over Seymour.
Henning’s batting average was .160 higher than the next highest competitor, Green Bay East’s Dalia Grajeda. Henning also scored a conference-leading 26 runs and tied for the top mark in the conference with triples (4) and home runs (4).
Joining her on the first team was senior third baseman Sarah Petry, who will play college softball at Ripon College next spring, and junior Brandi Gueths, who was named one of the league’s top two catchers.
Junior pitcher Erin Cerveny was named an honorable mention, as was sophomore Kate Hoffman.
