A LOOK AHEAD

SOFTBALL

Gresham vs. Menominee Indian

Gresham, which ended last season with a program-best fourth-place finish in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10, looks to start the conference season strong at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Menominee Indian High School.

Menominee Indian, which lost their top three hitting threats and ace Kelsey Corn, are looking to rebuild under new head coach Roberta Ponfil. The Eagles finished in the top two of the conference in each of the past two seasons.

Kamille Davids will likely step into the circle for the Wildcats against a Menominee Indian team that is looking for hitters to step up.

BASEBALL

Shawano at Clintonville

The Shawano baseball team, which could have as many as two games under its belt before it travels to Clintonville on Monday, will be looking for a similar result as last year’s contest between the teams.

On May 20 at Memorial Park, the Hawks dominated Clintonville, 14-1. With the possibility of three games over five days, Shawano head coach Rob Wolff will need to be careful with his pitching, especially with the WIAA’s new pitch-count rule.

The nonconference game will allow Wolff the opportunity to try some different things, but Clintonville’s first-year head coach Ben Smejkal will rely on junior Kyle Finger, Keenan Doornink and Hunter Vollmar to create production throughout the lineup.

STANDOUT

Shawano junior Erin Cerveny threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs in the circle, and drove in two runs at the plate on a double in the bottom of the seventh inning to get the Hawks on the board to start a three-run, two-out rally against Freedom on Tuesday. Shawano won 5-4 in 10 innings.

Cerveny led the Hawks (1-0) at the plate with three hits in five at-bats. She also struck out three batters and walked one.

QUICK HITS

• Three Hawks track athletes won individual events in the season-opening meet. The team will travel to Watertown on Saturday for its next competition.
