Leader File Photo Shawano Community High School senior Dylan Sumnicht was named the Bay Conference’s receiver of the year for his 891 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in eight conference games this season.

Leader File Photo Shawano Community High School senior running back Kien Moorman was the conference’s fifth-leading rusher and was named to the all-conference first team, along with Dylan Sumnicht, Jack Hanauer and Dakota Maltbey.

Shawano’s explosive offense racked up more honors when the all-Bay Conference football team was announced this week. The Hawks placed three seniors and a junior on the all-conference first team.

Senior wide receiver Dylan Sumnicht was named the receiver of the year in the conference. He was joined on the first team by senior running back Kien Moorman, senior quarterback Jack Hanauer and junior offensive lineman Dakota Maltbey.

Hanauer, who finished the season with a combined 2,235 yards, was named to the first team in the flex position because of his dual-threat ability as a quarterback, and Moorman ended the year just 17 rushing yards shy of reaching 1,000.

Senior wide receiver Connor Klish was named to the second team, and junior lineman Casey Baumann was an honorable mention pick.

Shawano head coach Al Tomow believed the senior class helped build the program to a competitive level, taking the team to its first WIAA playoff game since 2008.

“They stayed with the fight, and as far as our program advancing, a big part of it is because of what those guys have done for us,” Tomow said after the team’s playoff loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 21.

Shawano finished the season 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the Bay Conference.

Sumnicht broke his own school record for receiving yards, which he originally set as a junior. He finished the season as the first player in school history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards, ending his career at 1,123 yards.

“It’s been a lot of fun this year. We want to be back here next year, and that’s what the kids wanted to do,” Tomow said. “I’m very proud of them and excited for the future of Shawano football.”

The Shawano defense didn’t miss out on the honors. Three Hawks received honorable mention: senior Richard Johnson, junior Seth Sousek and sophomore Crede Timm.

“We can play football with anybody that steps on the football field with us,” Hanauer said. “We can compete.”

Hanauer hopes the Hawks can continue the success, even after this senior class departs.

“We got to the playoffs this year, and hopefully the next couple of years we can keep ourselves up here,” Hanauer said. “And then they can make another jump from there.”
