After two playoff victories, the Shawano Community High School girls basketball team finally ended its season Saturday with a 58-38 loss to Merrill in a WIAA Division 2 regional final in Merrill.
Shawano was led by sophomore Brandi Gueths’ 12 points. Megan Klitzke, Erika Dunnam and Tori DePerry pitched in 6 points each.
“We had to take command of the game, and unfortunately we didn’t do that right away,” Shawano head coach Ryan Koenig said.
Shawano (14-11, 6-8 Bay Conference) managed just 4 points in the first five minutes of the game. Shawano fell behind by 11 at half and could not make enough shots down the stretch to defeat the hot-shooting Bluejays (18-6, 8-4 Wisconsin Valley Conference).
“We didn’t make any shots. We’ve missed some open shots short,” Koenig said. “It could have been playing a back-to-back game, but they had the same thing. That’s not an excuse. We just didn’t have that energy we needed.”
The Hawks posted a 66-64 victory over Mosinee on Friday. After trailing by 5 points with under a minute remaining, Shawano scored 8 of the final 9 points for the victory.
Merrill went into overtime to defeat Antigo on Friday.
