The Bonduel High School girls basketball team came out aggressively in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 first-round matchup with Tomahawk.
The Bears scored the first 19 points of the game and forced 10 turnovers in the first six minutes en route to a 52-11 victory.
“We said right away that we wanted to get out and go with it,” Bonduel head coach Jerry Reinke said. “Obviously, we got out to a pretty quick start.”
Bonduel was able to get out on the fast break because of its defensive pressure. The Bears forced 19 first-half turnovers, leading to many fastbreak and easy layup opportunities.
Junior Hayley Sorenson scored 8 of the first 19 points for the Bears. Senior forward Taylor Weier added 6.
“They had a lot of good intensity. They are long and lanky. They are a good team,” Tomahawk head coach Alyssa Galvan said. “They executed their 1-3-1 and their defense well and that just caused us a lot of troubles tonight.”
Tomahawk sophomore Courtney Theiler hit a deep 2-pointer for the Hatchets’ lone field goal of the first half.
Bonduel responded with a 15-2 run to close out the half. Seven Bears scored in the opening 18 minutes of the game.
The second half was more of the same, with Bonduel controlling the tempo and making offensive execution difficult for the Hatchets (0-21, 0-12 Great Northern Conference).
Bonduel (15-9, 8-6 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) jumped out to a 40-point lead with 14:44 to go on an Emily Sorenson layup.
The starters were able to sit the final 14 minutes of the contest.
Reinke, however, wanted more consistent intensity throughout the game.
“You want to keep that go, go, go mentality,” Reinke said. “I thought for the most part, we did OK with that.”
Junior point guard Danee Collier scored just 2 points, but tallied nine assists, six steals and five rebounds for the Bears. Emily Sorenson recorded a game-high 13 points. Hayley Sorenson and Taylor Weier each posted 12.
Fifteen players on the playoff roster were able to see the court in the second half.
Bonduel will travel to No. 3 Xavier on Friday, meaning that Reinke wants to see a cleaner game, especially on offense, if the Bears hope to advance.
“I think we need to move the ball a little bit quicker,” Reinke said. “We got stagnant at times on offense and don’t move the ball as quickly at times as I’d like on the offensive end.”
